Field Notes from Jess: Rewilding 2022 Week 5/52

Razor Clam Harvest

My first Pacific Northwest Razor clam dig and I came home with my limit of 15 on day 1 and an additional 6 after taking on extreme weather of cold, wind and rain on day 2. We drove right out on the beach and after gearing up in my waders and attaching the net to my belt, I grabbed the clamming gun and headed out to take advantage of low tide.
The Pacific Razor Clam is one of the most sought after shellfish in the state of Washington and the beaches were packed with foragers who brought friends and family out to the coast to enjoy good times together and of course harvest food.
Nature's gifts are plenty and once again I felt the profound connection between our relationship to the land and how much there is to be grateful for.
I added some sea water to a bucket, placed the clams inside for transporting, and drove home with the greatest feeling of accomplishment and joy.
A quick stop at the store to pick up ingredients for clam chowder along with some panko for frying and a bottle of Chardonnay and I was all set for an exquisite field to table experience. Big thanks to my friend and neighbor Dave Fairley who prepared the chowder for a feast with friends.
Harvesting local wild food is not only a step towards more self-sufficient living, but a reminder of what it means to be human and rooted in our connection to nature. Wild food foraging brings people together in the celebration of a successful hunt. The honoring of that gift comes full-circle when we gather in community to share and connect, nourish and grow.
