Field notes from Jess ~ Rewilding in 2021 | Week 39 of 52
Path of the Hunter Course ~ September

I enrolled in an eight-month skills mentorship program with Earthwalk Northwest to further my education as a hunter. This weekend was our first gathering and it was a joy to be introduced to our instructor Frank Sherwood and spend three days in Issaquah WA to discuss hunting ethics, mindset, gear, rules and regs, hunting seasons and stories from the wild.
Our group of seven will be going through a lot together In the year ahead. We will set up deer camp in November, experience wild turkey hunts, sit in blinds together while hunting waterfowl, meet at the coast for clamming and enter beautiful rivers for fly fishing…(to name a few of the adventures).
I feel blessed to share that I made new friends this weekend and am confident that the journey together will be special, intense, raw, insightful, educational and will no doubt create strong bonds. While we all have unique reasons for wanting to learn the path of the hunter, there is a cohesiveness to our group dynamic. We have already shared sweet moments of laughter, tears and nourishing conversation with incredible depth.
Earthwalk Northwest is known for their incredible feasts, and while Frank barbecued his recently caught salmon on the grill, his wife Karen prepared a wild foods dinner that included elk meat bourguignon wrapped in a homemade calzone! Sharing a meal made with this much love and intention created warmth, connection and appreciation. We blessed the food and I ate with a full-heart knowing that every decision I have made in this last year, that has supported my great rewilding, has been exactly right an in alignment with a vision I am creating for how I want to live and the supportive community I hope to surround myself with.
