Elk Hide Drum Making ~ Witnessing Beauty, Human Connection and Sacred Ritual
14 wonderful humans came together today with teacher Katie Cavanaugh at the Harmony House in Sisters Oregon, to share in the making of 14 unique and beautiful Elk hide drums. Katie has facilitated the creation of 228 drums over the last 7 years, sharing this experience with those who hear the call. She was joined by Ben Sparrow who constructed the Pacific Northwest cedar hoops and Richard Sims who was present to hold space for the ceremony that was integral to the experience.
I was touched that a mother came with her teenage son, a man invited his mother, lovers worked together immersed in the weaving. A mother and daughter duo road tripped from across the State to attend.
Drumming is a powerful tool of transformation. There are scientific findings that drumming releases endorphins, the bodies natural pain reducer, and can help transmute grief. The sound vibration produces Alpha waves in the brain, which are associated with general feelings of well-being and euphoria.
Rhythm and sound have been crucial to every culture throughout history. Drumming has been used for ceremony and to communicate and journey into spirit realms throughout ancient history.
I have deep reverence for life and nature and our relationship to absolutely everything. The elk was harvested locally last year near the coast of Oregon by conscious hunters who use every part of the animal. These hides have been prepared with love and care.
In 4 days after hanging and curing our drums, we will meet again as a group to share in a feast, create our rhythm sticks and bring voice to our creations.
I can tell you that my heart is on fire. I am nourished by the people I am meeting and our shared love for learning the old ways. These are profound times and I find that acknowledgment of beauty, of art, of music, of food and the natural world, bring human connectivity to its fullest potential.
In love and gratitude…
