Cedar Honoring Basket ~ A Necklace for Small Treasures

February 13  | 9 am to 4 pm  | $115

Tenino Washington

Wildkind Academy welcomes guest instructor Karen Sherwood from Earthwalk Northwest.

Cedar bark is an incredible gift with many offerings. Small cedar strips are used to weave a beautiful honoring basket that can be worn as a necklace. Western red cedar along with yellow cedar, birch bark or richly colored maple bark is used for the creation of this small beauty. The finished basket measures about 1.5 in by 2.5 in.

After finishing the weaving, a leather flap will be added as well as glass beads or small charms. This basket is sure to draw comments wherever you wear it! The techniques used in this course are foundational weaving techniques that can be used in larger projects.

During our lunch break, Karen will offer a slide presentation of the traditions, techniques and ethics of cedar bark collecting.

About our Guest Instructor:

Karen Sherwood co-founded Earthwalk Northwest in 1996, a private school teaching earth-centered skills. Karen was hired by Tom Brown Jr. to develop and expand the wild foods curriculum for this well-known tracker school and received a strong understanding of traditional uses of wild plants while teaching there. She continues to teach ethnobotany programs through Earthwalk Northwest and other organizations such as the Dept. of Ecology, Washington Outdoor Women, King Co. Parks and the Earth Mentoring Institute. In addition to her botany background, Karen also spent many years in search and rescue, fine tuning her wilderness survival skills. To balance her expertise, she also teaches utilitarian uses of plants, including cordage and natural plant dyes. Her current Passion is teaching about the vast and wondrous uses of seaweed, as well as traditional Northwest basketry.

Class is limited to 12 participants and will fill up very quickly. Specific class details will be emailed prior to class. If you have any questions, use the contact page or email [email protected]
